According to Guide Book Sleman Travelling With Love, I look at Many Top Tourist Destinations in Yogyakarta which are interested in visiting based on the types of tours, such us village tours, historical tours, culinary tours, museums and monuments tours, etc. Then, the one of historical tours is this temple, Sari Temple, which are not many people honestly know, including me at the first time. So that's why this temple is still very quiet tourists until now. This place is also in the middle of the village and so far away from a main road, I think it's other reasons why not many people know about Sari temple.

Sari Temple is one of Buddhist temples which is in the northeast of Yogyakarta. This temple is located not far from Sambisari temple, Kalasan temple (around 0,5 km), anda Prambanan temple (maybe these could be your next trip). It's also near from Adisutjipto International Airport (only around 5,3 km). From the west, you should just look for Ayam Goreng Mbok Berek Restaurant (this is a friend chicken restaurant normally, but it has a different taste, and maybe you could eat there after taking photo in Sari Temple) and An-Nurumi Mosque which is on the left side. After you find them, you go straight, then you turn left (there is only one the turn left, so don't be confused 😆), then go straight (just follow the road until you find the temple). This temple precisely is in Bendan Hamlet, Tirtamartani Village, Kalasan, Sleman.

According to the history, Sari Temple was built in the Roman VII century or around the 8th and 9th centuries at the Ancient Mataram Kingdom when Rakai Panangkaran ruled. Meanwhile, it was first discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and the first restoration between 1929 and 1930. At the top of this temple, there are nine stupas and arranged in three parallel rows. Unfortunately, their conditions are not well ordered.

After seeing it closely, you will certainly be amazed by the architectural of this building, because of its unusual height and width. It's also called as the Angkor Thom from Indonesia. Actually, Angkor Thom is a heritage of the capital of the Khmer kingdom in Cambodia. Then, these heritages are various palaces, large statues, and temples which included Baphuon Temple. It's a three-storey temple which its architectural is the same as Sari Temple in Indonesia. So, that's why it's not surprising that Sari Temple is the Indonesian version of Angkor Thom. (😂😂😂)

Front View of Sari Temple (East)

Sari Temple is rectangular building with a size of 17.30 x 10 meters and the overall height of the temple from the top of the stupa to the ground is 18 meters. Previously, this temple had a gate, but it didn't exist longer and was replaced by an usual gate made of iron as the boundary between the village and the temple itself. Inside the temple, there are three lined rooms, each measuring 3.48 x 5.80 m. Then, they have two or three levels which are just below each stupa. So, overall this temple has six rooms in which the walls are plain without decoration (See the picture as shown above).
(In my opinion, what makes it different from other temples is the interior, structure, and the shape of Sari Temple itself. It's really magnificient and amazing)

In the past, these several terraced rooms were used to be a place of meditation for monks (Buddhist priests). In addition, this temple also functioned as a Buddhist monastery, and became a place of learning for monks. The upper floor is used as a place to store items related to religion, while the lower is used as a place of religious activity, teaching and learning, discussion, and so on.

Rear View of Sari Temple (West)

Sari Temple stands majestically facing east. The walls are covered with Vajralepa (bajralepa), a protective layer that is also similar to the walls of the Kalasan Temple. The outer walls are decorated with sculptures and other beautiful decorations. The total number of statues is 36 pieces, consisting of eight statues on the front wall (east), eight statues on the north wall, eight statues on the south wall, and twelve on the back wall (west). The size of these statues is the same as the size of human body in general (Woow !! how could it be !!)

In the doorway and window of the front wall of this temple, you will find a male and female statue in a standing position holding a lotus. Then, other decorations that you also find are carvings of various shapes, such as Kinara Kinari (a man with a bird's head), Suluran, and Kumuda (leaves and flowers that stick out from a round pot). Above the window and other niches, it's also decorated with Kalamakara without the lower jaw.

If you're interested in visiting this place, you just have to pay 2000 rupiah per person and it opens at operational hours from 09.00 to 17.00.

Well, so that's a little explanation about Sari Temple. It's better if we know about it and should visit this one historical tourist spot. I wish you'll look the magnificence and the beauty of this unusual temple architecture. Maybe it could be also your best photo spot, but the only thing you'd not to do is destroy, scribble, and etc. I hope that this Sari Temple in particular become a tourist destination known local and foreign tourists.

Thank you for reading this post 😃

Please, always look forward to other posts about tourist destination in Yogyakarta, Indonesia that I have visited. See ya 😊
